LEPRECHAUNS

Un leprechaun o lepracaun es un ser feérico que habita en Irlanda y se dedica a fabricar o arreglar zapatos. Su aspecto es el de un hombre viejo con una estatura que varía entre quince centímetros y algo más de medio metro, y pueden tener cara traviesa y digna a la vez. Muchos tienen barba y fuman en pipa.
Se cree que son muy ricos, ya que custodian muchas vasijas de barro llenas de tesoros. Según se cuenta, si alguien logra fijar la mirada sobre un leprechaun, este no puede escapar, pero en el momento en que se retira la mirada, aunque sólo sea un pequeño parpadeo, desaparece.
Hoy día solemos representar a los leprechauns como hombrecitos con un traje verde, sin embargo, según la tradición, también podían vestir gorros rojos, vestidos parduscos, zapatos de hebilla y tricornios (sombreros de tres picos). Cuando están trabajando, suelen usar un delantal de cuero de zapatero y un pequeño martillo con el que fabrican o arreglan pequeños zapatos, pero, aparentemente, sólo arreglan un zapato, y no el par completo.
Aunque durante el día el leprechaun es muy trabajador, al llegar la noche se transforma en clurichaun, un ser borracho, solitario y hostil, que se va de juerga montando sobre ovejas y perros como si fueran caballos. En estos momentos, si los tratas bien, cuidarán de tu bodega, pero si se les trata mal, causarán problemas en tu casa y derramaran todo tu vino. Además, durante estas juergas les gusta bailar bocabajo dando vueltas sobre la punta de su tricornio.

A leprechaun or lepracaun is a fairy being who lives in Ireland and works making or repairing shoes. He looks like an old man with a height ranging from six inches to just over half a meter, and they can have a mischievous and dignified face at the same time. Many have a beard and smoke a pipe.

They are believed to be very rich, as they guard many clay pots filled with treasures. Legend has it that if someone can gaze upon a leprechaun, he can not escape, but the very minute you stop looking at him, even if it is only a small flicker, he disappears.

Today we tend to represent the leprechauns as little men wearing a green suit, however, according to tradition, they could also wear red caps, brownish-gray clothes, buckled shoes and tricorn hats (three-cornered hat). When they are working, they often use a shoemaker leather apron and a small hammer with which he makes or arranges small shoes, but apparently they only mend one shoe, not the complete pair.

Although during the day the leprechaun is a hard worker, when the night comes he turns into a clurichaun, a drunk, lonely and hostile being, who goes partying riding on sheeps and dogs as if they were horses. In those times, if you treat them well, they will take care of your cellar, but if you treat them badly, they will cause problems in your house and spill all your wine. In addition, during these binges, they like dancing upside down spinning around on the tip of his three-cornered hat.

DOCUMENTAL SOBRE LAS HADAS/"THE FAIRY FAITH" DOCUMENTARY

Magnífico documental que vi hace unos cuantos años en el antiguo canal "Documania" (ahora llamado Canal Odisea). En Español se le tituló "El mágico mundo de las hadas”, aunque su verdadero título es “The Fairy-Faith”, literalmente “La Fe Feérica”.

El director John Walker explora el mundo de las hadas y nos introduce al folclore antiguo, mostrándonos los lugares donde se dice que viven los seres feéricos, y entrevistando a personas que creen en las hadas o que las han visto.

Entrevista con el maravilloso ilustrador Brian Froud, en la que nos cuenta cómo él llegó a creer en las hadas.



Two women from Nova Scotia (Canada) told their story about their encounter with fairies years ago on the Eskasoni Reserve.

Dos mujeres de Nueva Escocia (Canadá) cuentan la historia de su encuentro con las hadas años atrás en la Reserva de Eskasoni. Una madre y sus hijos fueron de picnic al campo y se vieron sorprendidos por una extraña música que no se parecía a nada de lo que hubieran escuchado antes. La mamá metió corriendo a sus niños en el coche para alejarse rápidamente del lugar. Ya en el coche, les ordenó a sus hijos que no miraran hacia atrás, pero una de sus hijas la desobedeció y pudo ver cómo un ser diminuto salía de detrás de un arbusto y se unía a un gran corro de seres igual a él, que bailaban en círculo cogidos de la mano, saltando y dando vueltas. Después, la niña se giró hacia delante e hizo como si no hubiera visto nada, para que su madre no la regañara. Cuando llegaron a casa, su madre les dijo que no debían contar a nadie lo que habían visto porque traía mala suerte. Así que guardaron el secreto durante muchos años hasta revelarlo en este documental.

Un hombre de Nueva Escocia describe su encuentro con la Gente Menuda del bosque, también llamados Espíritus de la Naturaleza. Nos habla de cómo su abuela le contaba ya historias sobre la Gente Menuda y sobre cómo años después, ya adulto, vio a una persona diminuta en el bosque junto a sus hijas. Las niñas se pusieron a gritar y todos huyeron del lugar. Asegura que se trataba de una persona y no de un animal ya que caminaba sobre dos piernas y no a cuatro patas. Les dijo a sus hijas que no contaran lo sucedido a nadie, porque no lo consideró algo normal. Así mantuvieron el secreto durante 15 años. Muchas personas creen que se trata sólo de un mito, pero este hombre afirma que él no piensa de la misma forma...

LA SIRENITA DE ANDERSEN/THE LITTLE MERMAID BY ANDERSEN

Encontré este precioso video de una película rusa sobre "La sirenita" de 1979. Dice el autor del video que esta película no es igual al cuento original de Hans Christian Andersen, pero que es mucho más fiel a la historia que la versión de Disney. Esta película es un musical y cambia la historia y su final.

No puedo opinar sobre ella, ya que no la he visto, pero me encanta este video, creo que capta la esencia de la historia.

Como breve apunte, os cuento qué cosas cambió Disney de la versión original de Andersen:

1- En el cuento no se menciona el nombre de la sirenita. En la película la llaman Ariel. Tiene gracia que la llamaran así, ya que Ariel es el nombre del rey de los elementales del aire o silfos, un elfo masculino.

2- La bruja del cuento no era mala. Su papel era neutral: sólo ayudó a la sirenita con su magia a conseguir lo que ella deseaba.

3- El príncipe del cuento estaba enamorado y comprometido con otra princesa desde el principio, por lo que la sirenita no tenía ninguna posibilidad de estar con él.

4- Por tanto, el final es muy distinto en el cuento original: la sirenita no logra estar con su amado. Podría haber vuelto al mar, pero para ello, debía hacer daño al príncipe y a su prometida, por lo que prefirió sacrificarse y no regresar. Sin embargo, la sirenita no se convirtió en espuma de mar ni desapareció, como cuentan en algunas versiones cinematográficas muy dramáticas (supongo que en esta versión rusa también), sino que las hadas del aire acudieron en su ayuda y la rescataron en el último momento, llevándola con ellas a vivir al cielo

Disney cambió el final para que fuera más feliz. Sin embargo, no creo que sea tan triste el final del cuento original puesto que ella logra transformarse en sílfide y podrá ganar su "alma inmortal" si realiza buenas acciones.

El tema de las sirenas y su empeño por conseguir un "alma inmortal" como la de los humanos es un tema muy interesante que trataremos en otra entrada.

I found this lovely video of a Russian film about "The Little Mermaid" (1979). The author of the video says that this film is not equal to the original tale by Hans Christian Andersen, but is much more faithful to the story than the Disney version. This film is a musical and changes the story and the end.

I can not comment on it because I have not seen it, but I love this video, I think it captures the essence of the story.

As a brief note, I'm going to explain what things did Disney change from Andersen's original version:

1 - The story does not mention the name of the mermaid. In the movie she is called Ariel. It's funny that she is called so, because Ariel is the name of the king of air elementals or Sylphs, a male elf.

2 - The witch of the story was not bad. His role was neutral: she only helped the mermaid with her magic to get what she wanted.

3 - The prince of the story was in love and engaged to another princess from the start, so the little mermaid had no chance to be with him.

4 - So the ending is very different in the original story: the little mermaid can not stay with her love. She could have returned to the sea, but in order to do this, she had to harm the prince and his fiancee, and therefore, she preferred to sacrifice herself and not return. However, the little mermaid did not become sea foam or disappeared, as some very dramatic film versions have told (I guess this Russian version too), because the air fairies came to her aid and rescued her at the last moment, carrying her with them to live in the sky

Disney changed the end to make it more happy. However, I don't think the end of the original story is so sad, because she does become a beautiful sylph and she can still win her "immortal soul" if she performs good deeds.

The theme of the mermaids and their efforts to achieve an "immortal soul" like humans is a very interesting topic to discuss in another entry.

UN MUNDO A SU MEDIDA/FREAK THE MIGHTY

Ésta es una de mis películas favoritas de todos los tiempos.
En español se la tituló "Un mundo a su medida", aunque el título original es "The Mighty" ("El poderoso"), y está basada en el libro "Freak, the Mighty" ("Freak, el poderoso") de Rodman Philbrick. Desafortunadamente, no he podido encontrar este libro traducido al español.

This is one of my favorite movies of all times.
It's entitled "The Mighty" and it is based on the book "Freak the Mighty" by Rodman Philbrick.



Es una historia sobre el valor de la amistad, la imaginación, la lectura y el coraje. Trata sobre dos chicos “diferentes” al resto…

Max es un chico muy grande y alto para su edad, solitario y con dificultades de aprendizaje. Todos piensan que es violento y estúpido, debido a su aspecto, y él mismo lo cree, por lo que tiene una baja autoestima.
Por el contrario, Kevin es un chico de gran inteligencia y un ávido lector, pero padece una grave enfermedad que le obliga a caminar con muletas.

Kevin transmitirá a Max su pasión por las leyendas del rey Arturo y los caballeros de la Mesa Redonda, lo que hará que combinen su fuerza y su inteligencia para convertirse en “Freak, el poderoso”, y luchar por ese ideal de justicia y honor caballerescos.

Una aventura diferente y emocionante, épica, en la que se mezclan la más dura realidad y la fantasía más conmovedora, enseñándonos que los cuentos y las leyendas no son sino reflejos de nuestra propia realidad, aunque a menudo lo olvidemos.




It is a story about the value of friendship, imagination, reading and courage. It talks about two boys 'different' from the rest ...

A different and exciting adventure, epic, which combines the most harsh reality and most moving fantasy, showing us that stories and legends are but reflections of our own reality, which we often forgotten.

EL REY Y EL PÁJARO/LE ROI ET L'OISEAU

Preciosa película de animación francesa, dirigida por Paul Grimault y basada en el cuento de Hans Christian Andersen, "La pastora y el deshollinador". La recomiendo a todo el mundo. Por desgracia, no está doblada al español, sin embargo, es posible encontrarla con subtítulos, y la película tiene pocos diálogos.

Trata sobre un malvado rey, enamorado de una pastorcilla de un cuadro. La pastorcilla está enamorada del deshollinador del cuadro de al lado y juntos escapan, siendo perseguidos por el cruel monarca, que tiene a todo el reino esclavizado.

Aquí tenéis un pequeño fragmento de esta obra maestra.



Beautiful French animated film, directed by Paul Grimault and based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale, "The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep". I recommend it to everyone. Unfortunately, it isn't dubbed in English, however, you may find it with subtitles, and the film has little dialogue.

The tale is about an evil king in love with a beautiful shepherdess in a painting. The shepherdess is in love with the sweep in the painting next door and they escape together, being pursued by the cruel king who has enslaved the whole kingdom.

Here is a small scene of this masterpiece.

PELÍCULAS RECOMENDADAS

He aquí dos películas fantásticas sobre hadas.

Para l@s niñ@s recomiendo "Cuento de hadas. Una historia verdadera", una película británica de 1997.

La película transcurre en el verano de 1917, en plena Guerra Mundial, cuando Frances, una niña de diez años, se va a vivir con su prima y sus tíos al campo mientras su padre está luchando en el frente. Frances cree en las hadas y paseando por el bosque, cosas mágicas comenzarán a suceder.

Las dos protagonistas están basadas en dos personajes reales y en lo que ellas contaron les aconteció en aquellas fechas.






Para los mayores recomiendo "Fotografiando hadas". Una película también británica, basada en las mismas protagonistas, pero enfocada a un público adulto, y mucho más oscura.

Here are two great movies about fairies.

For children I recommend "Fairy Tale. A True Story," a British film of 1997.

The film is set in the summer of 1917, in full World War, when Frances, a girl of ten years, goes to live with her cousin and uncles to the field while his father is fighting on the front. Frances believes in fairies and, walking through the countryside, magical things begin to happen ...

The two main characters are based on two real girls who lived then and told the world what happened to them at the time.

For dads and moms I recommend "Photographing Fairies", a British movie too, based on the same characters, but aimed at adult audiences, and much darker.
