¿QUÉ TOMO PRESTADO PETER?/WHAT DID PETER BORROW?

*****
Peter Pan is a character who has become famous all over the world. Today hardly anyone has read the original book, however, everyone knows him. This is a fascinating character, at the crossroads of many references. Maybe that's why it has become a universal character, because it embodies great multitude of ancient myths, and it appeals to the depths of the human being, awakening them.

Here's some background:
1. He took the nickname of "Pan" from the Greek god of the same name. Pan was a faun who belonged to the retinue of god Dionysus. With this character not only does he share the name, but also both played the syrinx or Pan’s flute (set of several parallel reed flutes put together). Likewise, although Peter is not a faun (a half-man, half goat), he did ride on a goat in his first book "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens." Finally, the god Pan is connected to the spring season, and Peter used to trick a tree of Kensington Gardens playing music to it so that it would believe that spring had arrived and it would blossom earlier than it should.
2. We are told in the book named above, that Peter Pan would accompany the souls of children in part of their route to help them not be afraid. The Greek god Hermes was also responsible to accompany the souls of the deceased to the afterlife. In addition, the cockerel was an animal that symbolized Hermes, and Peter Pan "crowed like a cock" when he felt happy. And of course, Hermes could fly too because he had “wings on his feet”.

3. This book tells us that, when babies fall from their stroller and get lost in Kensington Gardens, the fairies keep them and wait for three days to see if their parents return to take them. In case they don’t come back, they take them to Neverland, where they never grow. In traditional folklore, the fairies loved to abduct children and, sometimes, these children will no longer grow. In the story "Rumpelstinski", a dwarf wants to take a baby with him and he gives the mother three days (like the fairies of the garden) to try to avoid it, because during that time he still couldn’t take possession of the child.
4. Peter played his flute to cheer the fairy parties up. He used to sit on a large mushroom in the center of the fairy circle. However, he was not the first to do this: the old elf Puck had the same habit.
5. Some elves of the folklore were great seducers of human maidens. Same way acts Peter, first convincing Maimie to stay with him in the gardens and, later convincing Wendy and her female descendants to flee with him to Neverland. However, although those elves were not all well-meaning, good old Peter always ended up letting them come back home, so he would stay alone again.
I could continue writing lots of things about this magnificent character, but it would be too long. In my opinion, all these references do not make it less original at all, on the contrary, they enrich the myth he represents.

Until next post!

CORROS DE HADAS / FAIRY RINGS

Photobucket

Dance of the Wild Fairies

The fairies of the folklore hardly ever worked, because they spent most of their time dancing.
Sometimes, the fairies would attract human musicians to their faerie realm so they could dance along with them. In other occasions, they could present them with the gift of music.
According to a legend, a member of the McCrimmon, a famous family of Scottish musicians, who was despised because of his lack of talent, became a very famous bagpiper after his encounter with a little elf.

It is also said that human musicians learnt many of their melodies from the fairies, as for example ,the song named “Londonderry Air”, because it appears that no human lyrics goes well with it.

The favourite time of the fairies is the night. The elves always came out to dance graciously under the moon light, to the sound of harps and bagpipes. And the favourite way of dancing of the fairies was in circles.

Fairy Ring” is the name that was given to the circle of dry or bright grass, or the circle of mushrooms that remained in the place where the elves had been dancing the whole night.
A folklorist of the XVIIth century, John Aubrey, tells us how the parish priest called Mister Hart discovered a ring of fairies while he was walking on the hills of Wiltshire at twilight. The priest, very surprised, couldn’t run away, because he felt paralyzed as it he had been hit by a spell. He said that the fairies he saw were similar to tiny human beings that danced going round and round in circles, while they sang along and made a lot of little funny noises.

To accompany the fabulous drawings of Nil, and because I know you all love duendes (this is the Spanish name for pixies or goblins), I dedicate this new entry to them:
There are lots of different kinds of duendes in Spain, with different names, looks and habits, that’s why is better to call them “elemental beings”, as they live in each of the four elements: earth, water, air and fire.
However, even if they are so different from each other, all the families of duendes have something in common:

1- They are all ecologists as they live in nature, and that is why they protect the rivers, woods and mountains. If we damage a plant, tree or animal, they feel really offended.
2- They live in groups and they are governed by a king or queen.
3- They are usually invisible to humans, though some children can see them. Some animals, like dogs or cats, can see them too. However, they can become visible when they want too.
4- Many duendes can change their form or size, becoming ugly or beautiful, tiny or gigantic, or even turning themselves into animals if they wish to. We know about a duende that said to a human: “I’m bigger than you see me now. We can rejuvenate the old ones, make the big ones smaller and the small ones bigger.”
5- They are playful. They like to confuse, scare and surprise humans with their tricks. They can also be capricious or melancholic.
6- When they become friends with a human, they present him with valuable treasures or magical powers. But, on the other hand, if they get angry with a human, they become resentful and vindictive.
7- They live far more years than humans but they are not immortal. When they arrive to an old age they get smaller and smaller till they disappeared. The duendes of the earth are the ones who live less time and the ones of the air are the ones who live the longest.
8- They can be good or bad whenever is better for them. Though they usually help good people and they punish the people who are evil to them.
9- They are clever, some of them a lot, but they all have weaknesses that make them easy to fool by humans.
10- They control the powers of nature, as the wind, the storms, etc. And they can affect humans
with their magic.
11- What most scares them in the whole world is iron and steel, though, curiously enough, some of them are blacksmiths. Their weapons are not made of these metals but of stone.
12- To end, their main hobbies are music, dancing, playing and love. Their most important festivals are celebrated the night of the 31th of May (Beltane), the 24th of june (Summer Solstice) and the night of the 31st of November (Halloween or Samhain).
I hope you have liked this entry on elementals!
