PELIGROS DEL PAÍS DE LAS HADAS/DANGERS OF FAIRYLAND

Aunque a veces las películas y los cuentos nos hacen creer que en los países de las hadas todo es dulce y maravilloso, la verdad es que también son lugares llenos de peligros, ya que se rigen por leyes distintas a las de nuestro mundo.
Si alguna vez tuviérais el honor de visitar un reino feérico, aquí tenéis una serie de cosas que deberíais tener en cuenta:

1- No probéis la comida de las hadas: se dice que cuando un humano come de sus alimentos queda atrapado en su reino para siempre. (Sólo hay una excepción: los pastelillos que las hadas regalan a sus protegidos, pero, si no estamos seguros de que un hada es nuestra madrina, mejor no arriesgarse...).

2- Cuidado con el paso del tiempo: allí discurre de forma distinta a nuestro mundo. Siete días allí pueden ser siete años aquí, y bailar en un corro de hadas durante lo que para nosotros son sólo unos minutos, puede acabar convirtiéndose en el paso de un siglo o varios. Así le sucedió a "Rip Van Winkle" en una leyenda de Washington Irving: se quedó escuchando la música de las hadas y se quedó dormido. Cuando se despertó, habían pasado muchísimos años y él se había convertido en un viejo. Otro caso famoso fue el de Tomás el Rimador, que pasó unos días con la reina de las hadas (que, por otra parte, lo había secuestrado) y, al regresar descubrió que habían pasado siete años...

3- La sal nos protege de los seres malvados. Está prohibida para los seres feéricos (con la excepción de los que habitan en el mar, como las sirenas y los tritones, que viven en agua salada). También protege de las malas brujas.

4- El hierro es un metal prohibido para los seres feéricos. Cualquier objeto de este metal nos protegerá de seres oscuros.

5- Los cascabeles y las campanillas también nos protegen contra las malas hadas, ya que su sonido las ahuyenta.

6- De nuevo los tréboles de cuatro hojas. Estos no nos protegerán del peligro pero sí romperán los hechizos de las hadas. Los seres feéricos realizan un encantamiento llamado glamour, que hace que veamos espejismo. Por ejemplo, un hada puede vivir en una humilde cueva y mediante el glamour hace que nos parezca un lujoso palacio; un duende puede entregarnos un puñado de monedas y que éstas sean en realidad hojas secas. Llevando encima un trébol de cuatro hojas, no sólo se rompe el hechizo de invisibilidad de las hadas, sino que vemos las cosas como son en realidad y no como ellas quieren que las veamos.

Although sometimes the movies and fairytales make us believe that in fairy lands everything is sweet and wonderful, the truth is they are also places full of dangers, as they are governed by laws different from our world.
If you ever have the honor to visit a fairy kingdom, here are a number of things you should consider:

1- Do not taste fairy food: it is said that when a human eats their food, gets trapped in their realm forever (there is only one exception: the fairy cakes they give to their protected ones, but if we are not sure that a fairy is our godmother, it is better not to take any risks...).

2- Beware the pass of time: there it flows differently than in our world. Seven days there may be seven years here, and dancing in a fairy circle for what we may feel as just a few minutes, may end up being over a century or more. That is what happened to "Rip Van Winkle" in Washington Irving's legend: he stood listening to the music of the fairies and fell asleep. When he awoke, many years had passed away and he had become an old man. Another famous case was that of Thomas the Rhymer, who spent several days with the fairy queen (who, moreover, had kidnapped him) and upon returning, he found out that seven years had gone away...

3- Salt protects us from evil beings. It is forbidden to fey creatures (with exception of those living in the sea, like mermaids and mermen who live in salt water). It also protects from evil witches.

4- Iron is a metal forbidden to fey beings. Any objects made of this metal will protect us from dark creatures.

5- Bells and chimes also protect us against bad fairies, as their sound frightens them away.

6- Once again four-leaf clovers. These will not protect us from danger but they will break the spell of the fairies. Fey beings cast a spell called glamour, which makes us see mirages. For example, a fairy can live in a humble cave and by the glamour makes us see it as a luxurious palace; a pixie can give us a handful of coins and they may actually be just leaves. Taking with us a four-leaf clover not only breaks the fairies spell of invisibility, but makes us see things as they really are and not as they want us to see them.

BOLSITA DE SUEÑOS/LITTLE BAG OF DREAMS

Aquí os dejo un pequeño hechizo para comunicarse con las simpáticas y generosas hadas de las flores mientras dormimos, y que así nos ayuden a que nuestros sueños se hagan realidad.
Se trata de hacer una Bolsita mágica de Sueños perfumada que se coloca debajo de la almohada. Su fragancia mágica favorece los sueños feéricos.

Here you have a little spell to communicate with the nice and generous fairies of the flowers during sleep, so that they help us make our dreams come true.

It is about making a fragrant Dreams Magic Bag which is placed under the pillow. Its magical fragrance favors fairy dreams.

Ésta es la lista de lo que necesitamos:

* Música suave.
* Una bolsita dorada o plateada con cordón para cerrarla.¨
* 1/4 de taza de pétalos de rosa secos.
* 1/4 de taza de flores secas de lavanda (según tengo entendido, a las brujitas les encantaba el perfume de lavanda).
*1/4 de taza de margaritas secas.
* Un poco de aceite aromático de madreselva.

Here is a list of what we need:

* Soft music.

* A gold or silver bag with drawstrings.

* 1 / 4 cup of dried rose petals.

* 1 / 4 cup of dried lavender flowers (as I have heard, witches loved the scent of lavender).
* 1 / 4 cup of dry daisies.
* A bit of aromatic oil of honeysuckle.

Y así se realiza el encantamiento:

1. Ponemos la música suave para empezar. Introducimos todas las flores en la bolsita y mientras lo hacemos, decimos las palabras mágicas:

Sueños feéricos de las flores mágicas, venid a mí.

1. To start, turn on the soft music. Put all the flowers in the bag and, as you do, say the magic words:

Fey dreams of magical flowers, come to me.

2.Vertimos varias gotitas de aceite de madreselva sobre las flores. Mientras lo hacemos, volvemos a repetir:

Sueños feéricos de las flores mágicas, venid a mí.

3. Ahora, cerramos la bolsita tirando de la cuerda. Mientras atamos el cordón, repetimos una vez más:

Sueños feéricos de las flores mágicas, venid a mí.

2. Pour several oil droplets on the honeysuckle flowers. As you do, repeat:

Fey dreams of magical flowers, come to me.

3. Now, close the bag by pulling the rope. While you tie the cord, we repeat once again:

Fey dreams of magical flowers, come to me.

4. Entonces ponemos la Bolsita de Sueños dentro de la funda de tu almohada. Cuando te vayas a dormir, pon de nuevo la música suave que pusiste cuando preparabas la bolsita mágica. Y mientras te quedas dormida, repite:

Sueños feéricos de las flores mágicas, venid a mí.

5. Guarda la bolsita de los sueños dentro de la funda de tu almohada durante tres meses para favorecer los sueños mágicos con las hadas. Si algún día al despertar, recuerdas haber soñado con ellas, escríbelo en un papel para que no se te olvide.

6. Una vez pasados los tres meses, devuelve el contenido de la bolsita a la tierra, ya sea en el campo o en tu jardín. Viértelo debajo de un arbusto que tenga flores, como regalo de agradecimiento a las hadas de las flores.

4. Then put the bag of dreams within your pillowcase. When you go to bed, turn on again the soft music you used while preparing the magic bag. And as you fall asleep, repeat:

Fey dreams of magical flowers, come to me.

5. Save the bag of dreams whithin your pillowcase for three months to encourage magical dreams with fairies. If one day upon waking, you remember dreaming about them, write it down on a paper so that you do not forget it.

6. Once the three months have passed, return the content of the bag to the ground, either in the field or in your garden. Pour it under a shrub that has flowers on it, as a thankful gift to the fairies of flowers.

¿CÓMO SON LOS DUENDES?

Para acompañar los fabulosos dibujos de NIL y como sé que os encantan los DUENDES, aquí tenéis esta entrada sobre ellos:

Hay muchísimos tipos de duendes en ESPAÑA, con nombres, aspecto y costumbres DIFERENTES, por lo que es mejor llamarlos “ELEMENTALES”, ya que viven en cada uno de los cuatro elementos: TIERRA, AGUA, AIRE y FUEGO.
Pero, a pesar de ser tan distintos entre sí, todas las familias de duendes tienen estas cosas en COMÚN:

1- Todos son ECOLOGISTAS ya que viven en la NATURALEZA y, por eso, protegen los ríos, bosques y montañas. Si se daña una planta, un árbol o animal, se sienten muy ofendidos. Sin embargo, algunos viven en las CASAS de los humanos.

2- Viven en GRUPOS y son gobernados por un REY o REINA.



3- Normalmente son INVISIBLES para los humanos, aunque no para algun@s NIÑ@S. También pueden verlos algunos animales como los perros y gatos. Sin embargo, pueden hacerse visibles cuando lo desean.

4- Muchos duendes pueden CAMBIAR de FORMA y TAMAÑO, volviéndose feos o hermosos, diminutos o gigantescos, e incluso transformándose en ANIMALES cuando así lo quieren. Se sabe de un duende que le dijo a un humano: “Soy mayor de lo que tú ahora me ves. Podemos rejuvenecer a los viejos, empequeñecer a los grandes y engrandecer a los pequeños.”

5- Son JUGUETONES. Les gusta CONFUNDIR, asustar y asombrar a los humanos con sus TRUCOS. También pueden ser CAPRICHOSOS o melancólicos.



6- Cuando se hacen AMIGOS de un humano, le regalan valiosos TESOROS o PODERES MÁGICOS. Si, por el contrario, se enfadan con un humano, se vuelven rencorosos y vengativos.



7- VIVEN muchos MÁS AÑOS que los humanos pero sin llegar a ser inmortales. Cuando llegan a avanzada edad se van volviendo cada vez más pequeños hasta que desaparecen. Los duendes TERRESTRES son los que menos viven y los del AIRE los que más.

8- Pueden ser BUENOS o MALOS según les convenga. Aunque suelen ayudar a la gente bondadosa y perseguir a los que son malvados con ellos.

9- Son INTELIGENTES, algunos muchísimo, pero todos tienen puntos débiles que hacen que los humanos los engañen fácilmente.

10- Controlan los PODERES de la NATURALEZA, como el viento, las tormentas, etc. Y pueden afectar a los humanos con su MAGIA.

11- Lo que más les ASUSTA en el mundo son el HIERRO y el ACERO, aunque, curiosamente, algunos de ellos se dediquen a la profesión de herreros. Sus armas no se hacen de estos metales sino de PIEDRA.

12- Por último, sus principales aficiones son la MÚSICA, la DANZA, los JUEGOS y el AMOR. Y sus FIESTAS más importantes las celebran la noche del 31 de mayo (BELTANE), el 24 de junio (SOLSTICIO de VERANO) y la noche del 31 de noviembre (Todos los Santos – Halloween o SAMHAIN).

To accompany the fabulous drawings of Nil, and because I know you all love duendes (this is the Spanish name for pixies or goblins), I dedicate this new entry to them:
There are lots of different kinds of duendes in Spain, with different names, looks and habits, that’s why is better to call them “elemental beings”, as they live in each of the four elements: earth, water, air and fire.
However, even if they are so different from each other, all the families of duendes have something in common:

1- They are all ecologists as they live in nature, and that is why they protect the rivers, woods and mountains. If we damage a plant, tree or animal, they feel really offended.

2- They live in groups and they are governed by a king or queen.

3- They are usually invisible to humans, though some children can see them. Some animals, like dogs or cats, can see them too. However, they can become visible when they want too.

4- Many duendes can change their form or size, becoming ugly or beautiful, tiny or gigantic, or even turning themselves into animals if they wish to. We know about a duende that said to a human: “I’m bigger than you see me now. We can rejuvenate the old ones, make the big ones smaller and the small ones bigger.”

5- They are playful. They like to confuse, scare and surprise humans with their tricks. They can also be capricious or melancholic.

6- When they become friends with a human, they present him with valuable treasures or magical powers. But, on the other hand, if they get angry with a human, they become resentful and vindictive.

7- They live far more years than humans but they are not immortal. When they arrive to an old age they get smaller and smaller till they disappeared. The duendes of the earth are the ones who live less time and the ones of the air are the ones who live the longest.

8- They can be good or bad whenever is better for them. Though they usually help good people and they punish the people who are evil to them.

9- They are clever, some of them a lot, but they all have weaknesses that make them easy to fool by humans.

10- They control the powers of nature, as the wind, the storms, etc. And they can affect humans

with their magic.

11- What most scares them in the whole world is iron and steel, though, curiously enough, some of them are blacksmiths. Their weapons are not made of these metals but of stone.

12- To end, their main hobbies are music, dancing, playing and love. Their most important festivals are celebrated the night of the 31th of May (Beltane), the 24th of june (Summer Solstice) and the night of the 31st of November (Halloween or Samhain).
