"The Storyteller"is a television series created and produced by Jim Henson (creator of "The Muppets") in the 80's. It was a co-production between the U.S. and the UK.

The series recounts several European little known folktales, some of them quite dark. The narrator is an old storyteller who tells us these wonderful stories, sitting on his big chair and accompanied by his talking dog.

I really recommend it to everyone, it´s very good and captures the mystery and magic of true old times stories. As a child I had a good time watching it and I still think they are fantastic.

My pupils will recognize in some episodes many of the stories I told them in Xalubinia last November.

This is the list of stories that includes the series:

1 - The soldier and Death.

2 - Fearnot.

3 - The Luck Child.

4 - A Story Short.

5 - Hans, my Hedgehog.

6 - The Three Ravens.

7 - Sapsorrow.

8 - The Heartless Giant.

9 - The True Bride.

All chapters can be watched on YouTube. Greetings to all and enjoy it!

¡A divertirse!

Fairy houses are small structures that humans construct in nature so that fey creatures that inhabit there go and visit them.
This tradition, apparently, comes from the northeast of the United States (Maine and Vermont in particular), where families have been building these tiny houses for decades.

The materials used in their construction should also be found in nature: twigs, bark, dry grass, pebbles, shells, feathers, seaweed, pine cones, nuts,... These are some of the things that can be used in their manufacture. Thus, although we leave the house in the woods, as it is made of materials from the same place, it will not pollute the place.

It is very nice to do this activity in groups, with family or friends, since it takes place outdoors and allows us to walk through the countryside and connect with nature, teaching us to respect it and enjoy it at once. Although we can also build them on our gardens or even in our houses, why not? Are not there also domestic elves?

The magic of this is that we create a miniature world to offer it as a gift to the fey beings, with the hope that they will like it and visit it often. Therefore, it would be nice to let for them something to ear inside the house or at the door: maybe a little milk and a piece of bread with honey, some cookies or a tiny cake. Any of these things will please them, and will attract the most suspicious.

There are many books on the subject to get inspired with.

The rest depends on our creativity.

Have fun!

LEPRECHAUNS

A leprechaun or lepracaun is a fairy being who lives in Ireland and works making or repairing shoes. He looks like an old man with a height ranging from six inches to just over half a meter, and they can have a mischievous and dignified face at the same time. Many have a beard and smoke a pipe.

They are believed to be very rich, as they guard many clay pots filled with treasures. Legend has it that if someone can gaze upon a leprechaun, he can not escape, but the very minute you stop looking at him, even if it is only a small flicker, he disappears.

Today we tend to represent the leprechauns as little men wearing a green suit, however, according to tradition, they could also wear red caps,
brownish-gray clothes, buckled shoes and tricorn hats (three-cornered hat). When they are working, they often use a shoemaker leather apron and a small hammer with which he makes or arranges small shoes, but apparently they only mend one shoe, not the complete pair.

Although during the day the leprechaun is a hard worker, when the night comes he turns into a clurichaun, a drunk, lonely and hostile being, who goes partying riding on sheeps and dogs as if they were horses. In those times, if you treat them well, they will take care of your cellar, but if you treat them badly, they will cause problems in your house and spill all your wine. In addition, during these binges, they like dancing upside down spinning around on the tip of his three-cornered hat.

Here you have an extract of the fantastic movie "The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns":

EL CUELEBRE/ THE "CUELEBRE"

The cuélebre is a magical being from Asturias (north of Spain) and we can consider him a very fierce dragon type. He looks like a giant snake with wings like those of a bat. His scales are terribly hard and he is only vulnerable in soft folds that he has around his neck. He is the keeper of some magical fountains and of amazing treasures, and sometimes he even keeps enchanted maidens. He strikes cattle and eat the dead in cemeteries. There are many tales of this beast across Asturias and many are those who say they saw it. Here is the song that the Asturian singer Victor Manuel dedicated to this mythical figure.

Two women from Nova Scotia (Canada) told their story about their encounter with fairies years ago on the Eskasoni Reserve.

A man from Nova Scotia describes his encounter with the Little People of the forest also called Nature Spirits.

LA HIPÓTESIS DE JOHN A. KEEL/THE HYPOTHESIS OF JOHN A. KEEL

"Faun and the Fairies"/"Fauno y las hadas" by/por Daniel Maclise

John A. Keel wrote a groundbreaking book entitled "UFOs: Operation Trojan Horse" which was one of the first best-sellers that postulated the idea of the UFO scammers. In it he stated his belief that they have terrestrial origins. According to him, they actually are elemental beings, able to transform into form, and that he considered man's natural enemies. He thinks that they are the ones who in the past disguised themselves as angels, demons, fairies, spirits and ghosts of relatives, and they are the ones who take advantage of the obsession with UFOs that spanned through the XXth century in order to tease or even destroy the modern man. In the past they used to attract travelers to their doom calling them with familiar voices, but now seek ways to torment us, better adapted to modern times: they masquerade as aliens, and "men in black" (the name Keel coined to describe the mysterious characters who say harass UFO witnesses).

The evil goblins of folklore or the god Pan, who played malicious and unpleasant jokes along with his elves, are all, according to Keel, manifestations of these elemental entities. Very interesting this point of view presented by John Keel, and shared by other researchers, since, if we compare the UFO phenomenon with ancient folklore, we find that almost all elements of modern encounters with beings from other worlds are but modern versions of ancient stories, present in ancient legends and traditions.

Who knows ... Maybe this whole thing is nothing more than another practical jokeof fairies. In any case, I think that the opinion of Mr. Keel on elemental beings is too negative, as the fairy world is of great richness and not all beings that inhabit it are of evil nature.

GNOMOS EN EL JARDÍN/GNOMES IN THE GARDEN

*****

For centuries, there have been appearing different testimonies on the existence of elves, fairies and other beings similar to humans, who seem to inhabit a strange world deeply connected to our own but yet separated from it. The stories about people who have seen one of these magical beings of nature continue to this day. One of these modern accounts of contact with the inhabitants of this other world is that of Mrs. Ann Atkin, of Devon, England. One day in 1977, Mrs. Atkin was walking along the road leading to the entrance to her house, when suddenly appeared a gnome, giving her a fright. He spoke to her telepathically (through thought), and delivered the following message: that human beings should try to harmonize with nature since, once we managed that, we would be in harmony with ourselves and with others, and not destroy the Earth or our brothers. In addition, he said that they would like gnomes had some kind of organization to protect their interests. Therefore, Mrs. Atkin created the "Gnome Reserve" in the garden of her house, making it a place full of greenery and decorated with all sorts of figures of gnomes. Now this garden has become one of the most visited attractions in Devon. Her website is:

www.gnomereserve.co.uk

Traditionally, gnomes are the guardians of the Earth, and they seem to be manifestations of the spirit of the stones (as, for example, salamanders are the spirits of fire, water or mermaids, etc.). However, I think we should not forget that small beings nowadays called gnomes don’t belong to the Anglo-Saxon folklore but to the tradition of Germany and the Scandinavian countries, where they are called "tomten". Moreover, as I have heard, the word "gnome" was coined by the Swiss alchemist Paracelsus and comes from the Greek root meaning "knowledge", that means the gnomes would be "wise."

In any case, it may be that Ms. Atkin's named them like this for their resemblance to the gnomes in fairytales. Here's an interesting detail about the things Ann said she observed: "The hood of the male gnomes was pointed, while the hood of the females had a spiral shape. This indicates their origin: the pointy hood symbolizes 'up' and the spiral one symbolizes 'inside'." If this would mean they live in a place that is at the same time above and inside our own world, they may coexist with us in some other plane, invisible and unknown, which, however, some people, like Mrs. Atkin, are able to perceive sometimes.
