El candidato enamorado tiene que pasar una serie de pruebas y rituales a cual más variopinto y aparentemente absurdos la mayoría de ellos. Se trata de condiciones que el hada impone a su pareja humana y sin las cuales no estará dispuesta a casarse. Estos tabúes no se pueden vulnerar de ninguna manera. Sin embargo, los humanos siempre acaban rompiendo su promesa por descuido o error.
Si el hada es una encantada, es muy importante tener en cuenta las horas y días precisos en los que se debe llevar a cabo el desencantamiento preciso.
He aquí una lista de condiciones típicas que los seres feéricos imponen a sus enamorados:
1. No preguntarles por su nombre ni recordarles sus orígenes no humanos.
2. No hablar de su existencia con otras personas.
3. No pronunciar ciertas palabras ni aludir a ciertas personas en su presencia.
4. No pegarles ni tocarles lo más mínimamente con un objeto de hierro.
5. No mencionarles nada de lo que escuchen al pasar por delante de la cueva donde ellas vivían.
6. Lograr el consentimiento de su madre antes de casarse.
Y estos son algunos procedimientos para desencantar a encantadas:
- Cuando sus compañeras hadas y ella se introduzcan en la cueva, el pretendiente la tiene que agarrar por el refajo y lanzarle un puñado de tierra de iglesia.
- O bien: el pretendiente debe llevarla en brazos y sin detenerse desde su cueva hasta la playa (la dificultad está en que cada vez se hace más pesada conforme se acercan al mar).
No todos los humanos encantados son doncellas, ni todos los héroes son muchachos. Recordemos la historia de Janet, quien quiso desencantar a su amado Tam Lin. Para ello, tuvo que esperar escondida en el bosque hasta ver llegar la cabalgata feérica en la que él marchaba. Después hubo de ser valiente y abrazar a Tam Lin sin soltarlo en ningún momento a pesar de que éste le había avisado de que se transformaría en todo tipo de bestias y cosas horribles. Al final, se convirtió en un carbón ardiendo. Entonces, tal y como Tam Lin le había explicado, Janet lo lanzó dentro de un pozo cercano, del que él reapareció como un hombre desnudo, al que ella debía esconder. Su amada hizo todo esto y logró liberarlo con éxito, para disgusto de la reina de las hadas que lo había raptado.
En el caso de las selkies, las doncellas-foca, su pretendiente debía robarles su piel de foca para que permanecieran con forma humana, pero debía asegurarse de que su esposa no volviera a encontrar su piel, pues, de lo contrario, volvería al mar para no regresar jamás.
Otras leyendas famosas al respecto son la de “Lohengrin, el caballero del cisne”, en la que es la esposa humana quien pierde a su caballero élfico por preguntarle sobre su nombre y orígenes, tal y como él le había prohibido; o la de “Lanval y Tryamour”, en la que el caballero rompe el tabú de no revelar la existencia de su amada a nadie más, pero al que el hada finalmente perdonará, rescatándolo de morir en la hoguera.
Como veis, conquistar a un ser feérico no es nada fácil y mucho menos retenerlo a nuestro lado. Aunque bien distinta es la situación cuando son ellos los que se han enamorado de nosotros… Si no, que se lo pregunten a la sirenita del cuento de Andersen… En este caso, su amor será inquebrantable y nos seguirán allá donde vayamos con total fidelidad.
Pero ¡ojo chicas! Que algunos elfos zalameros andan sueltos por ahí, como el apuesto Ganconer de Irlanda, quien, en noches solitarias, seduce a las chicas con sus brillantes ojos negros y sus bellas palabras, sólo para dejarlas languidecer después. Un antiguo proverbio irlandés afirma: “La que encuentra al Ganconer puede tejer su sudario”.
Además, los elfos son muy celosos, y si una humana no les es fiel, son capaces de atraer la desgracia sobre ella. Así le sucedió a una doncella que no fue capaz de esperar a su amado élfico durante dos años, por el contrario, se casó con un humano y tuvo un hijo. El elfo, al regresar y ver su traición, hizo que la doncella abandonara a su familia sólo para hacerla naufragar en el navío en el que se suponía iban a escapar juntos…
Pero los chicos tampoco están a salvo: la Leanan-Side de la isla de Man seguirá a sus amantes hasta que les haya extraído toda su fuerza vital, llegando a provocarles la muerte.
Bueno, ¡quedáis todos avisados!
Fey beings often impose one or more taboos to their suitors. The human who wants to marry them, must keep his/her promises at all times, for if they break it, even slightly, they will lose their magical wife or husband.
The loving candidate must pass a series of tests and rituals, each of them as odd ass you could imagine and most of them apparently absurd. These are conditions that fairies impose on their human partners and without which they will not accept to get married. These taboos can not be infringed in any way. However, humans always end up breaking their promise by negligence or error.
If the fairy is enchanted, it is important to note the precise days and hours in which to carry out the necessary disenchantment.
Here is a list of typical conditions that fey beings impose on their lovers:
1. Do not ask for their name nor remind them of their non-human origins.
2. Not to mention their existence to others.
3. Do not pronounce certain words or mention certain people in their presence.
4. Do not hit them the most slightly nor touch them with iron.
5. Not mention anything of what you hear when passing in front of the cave where they lived.
6. Achieve the consent of his/her mother before their marriage.
And these are some procedures to disenchant an enchanted maiden:
- When her fairy fellows and she are entering the cave, the suitor has to grab her petticoat and threw a handful of church land on her.
- Or: the suitor must carry her without stopping from her cave to the beach (the difficulty is that she becomes heavier as they approach the sea).
Not all enchanted humans are maidens, and not all the heroes are boys. Remember the story of Janet, who wanted to disenchant his beloved Tam Lin. To do so, she had to wait hidden in the forest to see the fairy parade in which he was riding. Then she had to be brave and embrace Tam Lin without releasing him any moment, even though he had warned her that he would become all kinds of beasts and horrible things. In the end, he became a burning coal. Then, as Tam Lin had told her, Janet threw him into a nearby well, from which he re-emerged as a naked man, whom she had to hide. His sweetheart did all this and managed to successfully release him, to the chagrin of the queen of the fairies who had kidnapped him.
In the case of selkies, the seal-maidens, their suitor had to steal their seal skins to make them remain in human form, but they had to ensure that their wifes would never find their skins again, because, otherwise, they would return to the sea never to return.
Other famous legends about this are "Lohengrin, the Swan Knight”, in which is the human wife who loses her elven knight by asking him about his name and origins, what he had forbidden her; or the legend " Lanval and Tryamour ", in which the knight breaks the taboo of not revealing the existence of her fairy sweetheart to someone else, but the fairy will finally forgive him, rescuing him from burning at the stake.
As you see, to conquer a fairy is not easy at all and much less keeping him/her on our side. Although the situation is quite different when it is them who have fallen in love with us ... If not, ask the little mermaid of Hans Christian Andersen story... In this case, their love is unbreakable and they will follow us wherever we go with full fidelity.
But watch out girls! As some smoothie elves are on the loose out there, as the handsome Ganconer of Ireland, who, in lonely nights, seduces girls with his black eyes and beautiful words, just to let them languish later. An old Irish proverb says: "Who meets the Ganconer, must weave her shroud soon.”
In addition, the elves are very jealous, and if a human girl is not faithful to them, they are capable of bringing misfortune upon her. That happened to a girl who was not able to wait two long years for her fairy lover, on the contrary, she married a human man and had a son with him. When the elf came back and saw her betrayal, he made the woman abandon her family just to make her be wrecked on the ship in which they were supposed to run away together...
But boys are not safe either: the Leanan-Side of the Isle of Man will follow her lovers until she has extracted all their life force, even causing them death.
